Amira Amir Malaysia
Dr Amira is a Clinical Microbiologist at Hospital Sungai Buloh, Malaysia. Since 2019, she has held multiple roles in clinical microbiology, demonstrating leadership in advancing Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) and combating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). She currently serves as Deputy Head of the Infection Control Unit and is a member of the Hospital Infection Control Committee and has participated in ‘Clean Hospitals’ activities endorsed by the World Health Organisation.
Nationally, Dr Amira has contributed to the National Antibiotic Guideline (4th Edition, 2024) and the Management of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) revision, 2025. She has given talks in symposiums and sharing insights on advances in clinical microbiology to improve diagnostic services.
Previously, she was the State Clinical Microbiologist for Sarawak at Hospital Umum Sarawak, Kuching, where she led COVID-19 diagnostic operations during the pandemic, building up capacity in resource-limited settings.
Dr Amira earned her medical degree from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and a master's degree in Pathology (Medical Microbiology) from University of Malaya, with outcampus placement at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. She is also an Associate Member of the Harvard Medical School Alumni Association, having completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership in Medicine: Asia Pacific (2023) and a member of Malaysian Society of Infectious Diseases & Chemotherapy (MSIDC).
She is keen to pursue on genomic technologies in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as her area of interests.
