Penicillin Allergy Delabelling: A Practical Tool to Strengthen IPC and AMS in Combating AMR

Co-organised by: APSIC 2026 in collaboration with the Centre for Antibiotic Allergy and Research, Austin Health and the University of Melbourne

Date: 30 July 2026

Time: 08:00 am – 1:00 pm

Introduction
Penicillin allergy is one of the most frequently reported drug allergies worldwide; however, up to 90% of reported penicillin allergies are not true allergies. Inappropriate penicillin allergy labelling leads to unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, increased antimicrobial resistance (AMR), higher healthcare costs, and suboptimal patient outcomes.

Course information
This pre-congress workshop focuses on penicillin allergy delabelling as a practical, evidence-based strategy to strengthen Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) programmes and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). Participants will be guided through core principles of penicillin allergy assessment, risk stratification, and the role of direct oral penicillin challenge, supported by current evidence and real-world clinical experience.

The workshop integrates expert-led sessions with interactive case-based discussions to support translation of knowledge into practice. Emphasis will be placed on implementation strategies across both inpatient and ambulatory care settings, including experiences from low- and middle-income country contexts.

Designed for clinicians, pharmacists, and healthcare professionals involved in antimicrobial prescribing and stewardship, this workshop aims for capacity building, enhances clinical decision-making, and supports sustainable implementation of penicillin allergy delabelling as a key intervention in combating AMR through strengthened IPC and AMS efforts.
