Dr. Doo Ryeon Chung is a leading infectious diseases specialist with over 25 years of experience, particularly in antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection control. He is a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Samsung Medical Center and has played a crucial role in developing computerized antibiotic prescription programs that have significantly improved antimicrobial stewardship. His expertise is evidenced by over 300 papers published in prestigious journals. After earning his M.D. from Seoul National University and Ph.D. in Microbiology, he completed post-graduate training, including a clinical fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Asan Medical Center and a research fellowship at Harvard Medical School. His career has been marked by leadership in nationwide infection control efforts, and in recent years he has been responsible for leading the Korean National Healthcare-associated Infection Surveillance System (KONIS). Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Chung has been a key advisor on public health policy, guiding the Korean Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) and WHO on critical issues. He leads the Asian Network for Surveillance of Resistant Pathogens (ANSORP), contributing to understanding and addressing antimicrobial resistance in the Asia-Pacific region. As Secretary General of the Asia Pacific Foundation for Infectious Diseases (APFID), he managed antibiotic stewardship campaigns and played a crucial role in developing APEC guidelines to tackle antimicrobial resistance. In 2024, he co-chaired the 14th International Symposium on Antimicrobial Agents and Resistance (ISAAR). Since 2018, Dr. Chung has been an active council member of ISID, contributing to its Publication and Education Committee. His recent appointment as a council member and Exco member of the Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control (APSIC) further cements his leadership and influence on the global stage. Most recently, he joined the editorial team of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy as a Minireview Section Editor.
